Lymphedema treatment program

The Spectrum Health Lymphedema Program is one of four National Lymphatic Network centers in the country that is both a diagnostic and treatment center, offering patients a full continuum of care and expertise. We begin with a diagnostic evaluation, which includes a multidisciplinary team approach. The physician, nurse practitioner and clinic nurse are specially trained in lymphedema so we can make an accurate diagnosis, oversee treatment, and manage this chronic condition. In addition, on the same day as your evaluation, you'll know the next steps for treatment and therapy.

After your lymphedema is precisely diagnosed, our specially trained physical and occupational therapists offer combined treatment techniques, including manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging, lymphatic pumps, skin care and exercises. The result is that our patients experience reduced swelling and fewer complications, while increasing their strength, function and comfort.

Our program is comprehensive and personalized to meet your individual needs. Our team works closely with your primary care physician and other members of the medical team to ensure your treatment is seamless. Features include:

• Extensive medical evaluation with our provider
• Appropriate diagnostic tests to determine the cause and degree of lymphatic dysfunction
• Monitoring limb volume changes with the Perometer® (a measuring device that uses infrared laser technology)
• Therapy sessions with a certified physical therapist, which may include manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging and the Healthy-Steps Lebed method, a therapeutic exercise program
• Education regarding skin and home care management
• Exercise and activity recommendations to boost strength, range of motion and function
• Compression garment recommendations to prevent the return of fluid buildup
• If appropriate, lymphatic vasopneumatic pump use

Before your first visit, please have your physician send your health history, as well as any relevant information regarding your main concern, to our office. Bring a list of current medications to your initial visit and be prepared to answer general health questions.

The lymphedema program is located in at Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion on Michigan Street at Coit Avenue. Look for parking ramp entry marker No. 5.

Complimentary valet parking is available Monday to Friday, from 6am to 7pm.
