In your cancer journey, you may find yourself having to deal with side effects from your treatment such as pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation and fatigue. Acupuncture is not a cure for cancer, but it can help you manage difficulties that can arise as a result of the medications going through your system.
Spectrum Health Cancer Center’s acupuncture program offers an opportunity for you to heal in a safe environment with a highly specialized physician. Samir Rajani, MD, is a board-certified internist as well as a diplomat of the American Board of Medical Acupuncture. Dr. Rajani’s dual training allows him to provide expert acupuncture therapy for the unique medical problems cancer patients often experience.
Acupuncture is based on the idea that energy flows through your body in distinct pathways. During your session, fine needles will be inserted into specific points on your body to adjust the flow of energy and improve your pain symptoms. This safe treatment has minimal discomfort and there are no significant side effects.
Some people use acupuncture as their only method for relief and others use it together with other medical treatments. It has been known to address both the body and the mind and, in some cases, it resolves conditions aside from the problem you are initially trying to address.
As a cancer patient, you may want to consider acupuncture to alleviate pain, loss of appetite, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and constipation, so you can better withstand your sometimes demanding cancer treatments.
A plan specific for your needs will be put together at your first visit. The usual starting point is one treatment a week for three weeks, followed by a reassessment of your symptoms. Each appointment is typically 30 minutes long. Acupuncture may help treat a variety of other health concerns associated with cancer treatment.
Medical acupuncture is available at Spectrum Health Cancer Center at Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion. Your physician may refer you to our clinic or you may contact us directly.
